In an attempt to stop watching vacuous entertainment (TV) in the evenings and do something a bit more sociable I started searching the net for interesting boardgames. Arkham came to my attention and after a bit of searching managed to track a copy down and i'm now awaiting its arrival.
I was just wondering if any of you gamers out there have played it and could suggest some other games I might enjoy.
Hi, by the way
I own it, and i have some advice...Cancel everything for two days, cause day one will be required to read and know the rules ( a fatal flaw i made when playing it for the first time was not knowing all the rules) and the second day to play it, its a long haul game as far as i can make it, something you would devote youe whole evening too for one game of it, and its superb, Also if you roleplay, and you want to introduce mates to roleplaying its good, cause you almost have characters instead of just place markers
Zompire: Noun:- the result of a Zombie and a Vampire getting there Bow Chica Bow Bow on with each other.
I've also played it.
The first time with 5 players. It took 8 hours. We stopped the Great Old One from destroying Arkham, only to realise that if we had read the rules properly we would have lost.
The second time was about 3 days later, with 7 players. It took between 6 and 7 hours, with a stop for food. We knew all the rules, and stopped the Great Old One from destroying Arkham.
It was fun both times. Having beer helps. The game has lots of funk parts, but keeping track of what they all do can be tricky. Also having to remember that each Great Old One has its own special abilities which are active through the game. These also interact with the monster abilities and the players.
But if you want a similar game, you should check out The Fury of Dracula. Either the Games Workshop original (Back when Games Workshop actually made something other than miniatures) or the recent revamped (pun unintended, but fun anyway) version also by Fantasy Flight Games.
One player is Dracula, and the others have to co-operate to hunt him down across Europe and kill him. A game which can be frustrating and fun at the same time. The purist seem to think that in the original game Dracula has a better chance of winning, but the new game introduces a new character, and lots more funky playing pieces.
But good luck with Arkham Horror. It is a great game.

The two things I'd say about Arkham Horror are:
1) Don't try and play it like a game of Risk. Have some fun, try and inject some flavour, and you'll enjoy it a lot more than if you try and run it like you're a Commando Squad.
2) Don't start playing it at 1am.
Have fun. :)
Hi,
I personally haven't played it but I know people who have and say it's very good. I think there are plans for a regular Tuesday game of it after the Festival at the 3 Tuns pub or it might have been Bacchus; I can't remember for sure.

Playing : Nothing.
