Modern Warfare

Submitted by Eggyt on 9 February 2007 - 4:02pm.

Anyone know any decent modern style wargames/combat style games. Nothing too heavy rules wise but something which covers modern military as I fancy a game with lots of recognisable modern machinary as opposed to futuristic tanks (which I love in spades dont get me wrong). Mostly as an excuse to make and paint something different.

Doesn't have to be a game that comes with miniatures either just something that has rules that I could use alongside model kits maybe 1:35/28mm scales.

Anything that means I could have a city fight among modern buildings that arent heaving with gothic architecture for a change. (Such as World Works Games City of Mayhem kit).

Any thoughts?

What do you define as modern? In my definition, modern can include anything from the second world war onwards.

Anyways, 1/35 is a pretty big scale, would that imply a skirmish game? keep in mind 1/72 is about 20mm scale.

I'm trying to dig through my brain to think of any really really modern miniature games (i.e. modelling wars within the last 10 years), and had a trawl through the web to see anything that looked interesting, here's a shortlist of stuff I thought looked vaguely interesting and that I have seen the name of here and there:

http://theminiaturespage.com/rules/mod/afot.html

http://theminiaturespage.com/rules/mod/wrg1950.html

http://theminiaturespage.com/rules/ww2/baps.html

in fact go to http://theminiaturespage.com/mod.mv, it has a bunch of rules with some review and overviews and stuff

Another place you may want to look at is http://freewargamesrules.tiddlyspot.com/ , lots of free wargames rules, mostly a little too light for my taste, but always worth a look.

Have fun finding games you wanna play, always the challenge :)

Thanks for that I'll take a look. I should have said I meant Post WW2. As in present day or thereabouts for the most part. Reason I was looking at 1/35 scale or thereabouts was it fits in more with the current scenery I have (for 40K and such). More than say 1/72 does. And yes I know 1/35 is larger than GW scale but it's close enough. Plus I used a lot of 1/35 kits when making various bits of scenery and such so it works out.

As for the WorldWorks Games Cardstock terrain again the scale would be too large for 1/72. But yes a skirmish scale game is more my cup of tea anyway with each model representing an indidual trooper etc. Still those resources you've pointed me too look like they may cover that kind of thing.

Thanks.

The biggest issue of course with 1/35 is finding the models for a sensible price. Anyways, glad to be of help, tell us of any successes you have in finding a ruleset, I'm always interested in lookin at new new rules

Well, on rethinking maybe 1/72 isnt so bad. I could still use carstock terrain I would just need to reduce the printer size accordingly to bring it to the right scale. Just means it inst re-usable for other 25/28mm games. But 1/72 does always have the appeal of cheapness.

I plan to hunt about a bit more on the rules front but it might be a lost cause as I cant quite find the balance of detail and speed I fancy. Maybe I'll have to write my own. ;)

1/72 is great cos there is a huuuge selection of model kits out there (admittedly of variable quality) and you can get about 50 men for about 4 pounds, which is value if ever i saw it :)

I don't know much about the system but apparently the mini's are painted to a reasonable standard. Also I can order it in for you if you're interested in it.

Based on Starship Troopers I believe. Get along to ORC at the Three Tuns on a Saturday as I believe they run various Mongoose games

We just got 3 sample infantry figures in for Battlefield Evolution so if you want to have a look at what the paint jobs are like before ordering swing by the shop and have a look.
