Faith, Idleness & Menites

Hello, I am Dr. Christopher C McDonald of the glory of Menoth and it has occurred to me that though there are only around 100 people who play Warmachine in and around Edinburgh only about 5 of those play the Protectorate.

This disturbs me for a great many reasons the best one being that the Menites have some really great looking models and in my opinion some of the best in the game. Menite history, back story and indeed concept art is some of the best works I have seen and I have seen a good few. Is the lack of faith in Menoth just that, or is it a lack of faith in god being projected onto Menoth?

Perhaps I might be thinking to far out of the box, perhaps the problem is within... The rules concept for the menites may seem a little cruel at first but when you compare them to Cygnar or Cryx you can sort of say to your self "Hm, I have a good thing here". With that said is it there game balance that is in question or are they just too overpowered? Because they are most certainly not underpowered.

Anyone else seeing very few Menites at clubs & around Edinburgh or is it just me...?

It is true, I play against less Menites, and for this I am thankful. They are just a complete pain in my big red derriere.

Since moving to the froggy part of Canadia, I have found a much larger group that play in the FLGS, (obviously much less friendly than Black-Lion, well, actually that's only true since Lucy worked there, Liam can be a real grouch!), of up to 12-15 regular gamers, and of them, there are 2 menoth, and they are amongst those whos appearances are rare. Yes, on first sight Menoth are not the most exciting, they don't hit as hard, shoot as well, or are as fast and sneaky as Cryx, but the overall synergy and ability to shut other factions down that Menoth has puts them as a force to be reconned with.

In short, I am starting to build up a small Menoth force, as I see the great potential.

But I could never see them as anything but second to Khador. Be what they may, they don't got no Devastator!

Menoth are a bit odd.

Their style of play isn't immediately apparant from the book. You look at them and you think "Do these guys shoot? No Cygnar shoot. Do these guys smash? No Khador smash. Are these guys fast? No Cryx are fast..." and so Menoth are seen as inferior because nothing really leaps out at you and goes "WAAA I'M BROKEN!".

What Menoth do accomplish, however, is a control-style lock on the board. They're spectacularly suited to forcing your opponent to fight you on your terms. While this is a powerful strategy - especially in the hands of an experienced player - it's unlikely to ever be as popular as "Lol! My guy has some big numbers lol!"

Painting hordes of infantry (pretty though they may be) puts a lot of people off too.

Menoth were my second choice army for WM, though they were unfortunately usurped by Mercs once the numbers went up enough. They have similarities to Khador in that their jacks are hugh and slow, but their table control, between template weapons (rockets, grenades and flamethrowers) and crazy feats (knockdown, no focus) it is true that they can really make the game happen their way. Just don't forget to sacrifice your infantry; they want you to, its why they came.

As for painting them, there's a certain joy to a simple but striking paint scheme. Whether you got for red and white or red and black, you get an immediate, easily repeatable scheme that is half finished once you've done the undercoating.

Plus, of course, you now have the P3 boxes to giude you. All is well with the Menites.

...Though I don't know why!

I'm new to the game and the first force I was attracted to was the Protectorate, though they are not my style. I'm more the type of guy who'd be attracted to using Cryx.

I think my choice was made by going "Oooh, Shiny!" when i saw the model for the Harbinger.

They don't seem to have any gaming feature that stands out, they don't shoot well, they aren't particularly tough, or hit that hard.

Theis quality shows when you start to see how the warcaster you use works with certain units, such as Feora with Flameguard.
