My last minute steps to present buying. Bear in mind that by this point you have no hope of finding them the perfect gift, and none either of an almost good gift, or even something they might like. Your thought process is one of crazy relentless fear that you will be seen as stingy or ambivalent towards those you care about.
Didn't they once tell me they really wanted to take up scuba diving/hill walking/going to the gym more? I'm sure they did. Where is the nearest shop that sells equipment my loved one will never use and will take up space in their hall? Oh, wait. Damn.
Dragons! Everyone loves dragons, well some people do, I must know someone who likes dragons. Quick lets buy some dragon based merchandise. Excellent. Who's it for? I don't know but I'm sure it'll come to me eventually.
What about a calender? It's nearly January and no one has ever got one by now. This gift will be completely original! And I'm sure I remember them once mentioning Oragami/Cute Kittens/ Views of some unpronnouncable norwegian fjord somewhere!
How about something unique! Featuring them! A calender of my drunken photos of them maybe, or their name written in chinese in a frame! Or.. or.. their 3D head in a glass box amde out of that wispy stuff, that's classy. Right?
Screw it they're getting money and/or vouchers. Let them make their own damn decisions
