Another Newbie!

Hello all!

I hope no one minds me posting this at the moment, because I don't actually live in Edinburgh (yet!). I'm hoping to relocate up there and I've started applying for jobs. I've role played a lot in the past and I will be looking to do so again, I'm currently living in a rpg wasteland! So really at the moment I'm looking to make contacts, find out what people are playing and where there are places available. In the past I've taken part in Star Trek, Star Wars, D&D and Vampire games, amongst others. I've also taken part in play by email games, but I miss the social aspect of gaming in these, so I gave it up. Most of the games I've been involved in were pretty much free form, although I have played in games that used rules such as Fudge and D20.

The game I most wanted to be involved with, but which didn't happen, was one based on Tolkien's Middle Earth, around the time Morgoth was smashing it about. Yes I'm a bit of a Tolkien fan too!

Best wishes

Nice to hear from you.

Well, let me say that you'll be coming from an RPG wasteland to a veritable Metropolis if you move up. There are 3 active RPG societies as well as Gaming friendly pubs and other venues to find and meet gamers at.

We have players for most games in and around edinburgh too. I don't know of anyone running anything set in Middle Earth at the moment but that may change soon enough.

We do have our fair share of D&D games running though we also have a good mix of everything else as well. From WFRP, Runequest, Star Wars, Earthdawn, Traveller, Vampire (both new and old) Exalted, Ars Magica, Buffy, Witchcraft... The list goes on and on.

We also have an active LARP scene running as well with the Camarilla running Vampire, Werewolf and Mage chronicles as well as some Fantasy Larps too.

Then on top of that there's all the Board, Card and War game's meetings and clubs too and our own in-house events. In Edinburgh you can game every night of the week and not have to visit the same society twice.

Let us know when you're coming up though and we'll make sure that you're welcome and if you come find the shop we'll be able to help point you in the right direction of where to go too :)

Gulp! That's one heck of a lot of gaming going on there! I'm sure London had nothing like this going on when I was there. Mind you it was a bit harder finding out what was going on there anyway! One of the main gaming shops in the West End couldn't be talked into having a notice board for people to contact other gamers and let them know what was running! This board is great however and I've found out more information about gaming in Edinburgh in a few minutes than I did in years living in London! Is Edinburgh the gaming capital of the Universe? It certainly seems that way! It's certainly given me another reason to want to move to Edinburgh, for gaming!

I will be coming up to Edinburgh again in December to register with agencies, got to hang on just a little longer before booking up in case anything comes of the jobs I've already applied for. I'll post here when I know the exact dates and I'll certainly come looking for the shop when I come up! It would be great to meet a few people too. Perhaps even run a NPC one evening or something. At the moment I know where two shops are in Edinburgh and that's Forbidden Planet and Royal Mile Whiskies! I'll make yours the third! :-)

Yup, we certainly do have a hell of a lot of gaming going on. It does slow down a bit during the university holidays, and there are sometimes venue problems over the festival but even then you can usually find gamers lurking in the most unexpected of plaves with polyhedrals in hand :)

Let us know when you're coming up to edinburgh and we'll make sure you find us and we'll see who we can introduce you too. I can even give you directions to the shop from either FP or Royal Mile Whiskies. (And might I say that if you're only going to know the location of 3 things in Edinburgh then those 2 and Black-Lion make a fine 3)

Drop us an email or leave a message here when you know when you're coming up and we'll see if we can't arrange some thing :)

Cheers,

Hi Liam,

I'll be taking the train up on Sunday 10 December (arriving early evening) and going back Saturday 16 December (in the morning). I've contacted some agencies now, although I don't know when exactly any appointments will be yet, but I'll be paying a visit to your shop as soon as I can. I've found the street on the map (I now have an A-Z instead of the silly little tourist map!). So now I know where to: a) buy comics, b) buy Whisky and c) get RPGs. Now I just need to find a supermarket so I can buy food! LOL.

I actually got my dice tin out for the first time since 2002 the other day to see what I had in it! The moths were very pleased to be let out! Of course I have done some online gaming since then, but no honest to goodness dice rolling stuff! Actually one of the games I used to play in (it was an ongoing campaign that's sort of going again) has a web site:

http://travel.to/startrekcolony

My characters have become NPCs now, but I used to play Kath'lar (a Klingon) and Lyranna (a Betazoid). It's all quite a read, if anyone has the time! And regarding Lyranna, yes I was playing her when all the nasty stuff happened, but not now she's going all Dark Phoenix! Which is such a pain as that looks much more fun to role play!

Well I'm really looking forward to my next trip to Edinburgh and visiting Black Lion. And if anyone has any recommendations regarding rental agencies, I'll be all ears!

Best wishes

Well, I've got Monday morning booked up now, so I'm aiming to get to the shop around 2.00pm on Monday 11th December. Only one agency booked up so far, but I keep missing calls on my mobile from someone who with holds their number. If that is an agency, it's not very helpful for calling them back!

I'm also trying to arrange (through a friend) a visit to Laser Quest while I'm there. I've only played it once, with a pack that didn't work very well and so I was rubbish! She's insisting I take more of an interest in it, as she's a very good player herself!

Guess I'm gonna be in working on monday afternoon then with Iain. Wouldn't want to miss you after all this hype :)

On the shops front there is a Tesco Metro just round the corner from here and more take-aways than you can shake a stick at so you're sorted for food. There's another (some might say better) comic shop near here too called (Dead)Head Comics in case you feel like checking out the evil empire's competition. We have a Games Workshop 10 minutes walk from here if that tickles your fancy and a whole bunch of gamer friendly pubs within easy walking distance.

So bring your map and I'll show you where all the cool places are and if you're lucky I might even be able to take you to a couple.
