Looking for a ghoulish game

Submitted by twisted on 11 October 2006 - 12:41pm.

With Halloween fast approaching, a friend has organised a Zombiethon for some friends.

Currently, we have a couple of horror games (Mall of Horrors, Fearsome Floors) but thought I'd invest in a new game for the occassion.

Anyone played any games of the horror genre they'd recommend?

Favorites in the group currently include: Ticket To Ride, Fearsome Floors, Blokus, Guillotine and Cosmic Encounters.

Well if its going to be a zombieton then Zombies!!! or any of that family of games is a must! Good zombie killing beer & pretzels fun for all the family. Well maybe not all the family ;)

Be it ever so humble, there's no place like my shop :)

One of the group has warned me off Zombies. He has said this before when I previously considered it.

Since he is going to be one of the main players it'd make my life easier to keep him happy. (It's like having a girlfied without having to tell him his bum doesn't look big in that dress).

Anything else spring to mind?

One of the best horror genre games around. Might be a bit more involved than you're looking for but it's easy to learn and you almost never survive.

Played a game once where as players were devoured, shredded and/or went insane they took control of the offending monster and went after the others. Cries of betrayal, maniacal laughter and threats of recrimination ensued. Best Christmas Ever... check it out here

I feel you should have a "it's not you it's me" chat with your friend :-)

I looked at Arkham Horror and was intrigued. If I pick it up correctly, it is everybody against a scary 'god' monster.I quite like the idea as many of our games get very heated at times. (never play Lightspeed with us, ever.)

I'm planning on going up to the shop at lunchtime so I'll have a chat with Liam and annoy him by being all newbe like.

Yeah it's a co-op game which is why Sonya and I like it so much. I like the concept of not being able to shut down the portals through which the monsters arrive without first traveling through the hellish realm in question. A good group will really get the best out of the game.

That said it doesn't mean you can't hose down your friends with a tommy gun for drinking your beer... only in the game of course.

what did you decide on? or are you still pondering?

Went into the shop on Thursday and found out Arkham Horror was out of print now so didn't get that.

Zombies still looks alright to me but as per previous posts I am keeping one of the main players sweet.

Went to look at games for me instead; Bohnanza and Guillotine are great wee games but are a Xmas present for someone else. They were both out of stock but that just means I'll have to go back to the shop at the end of the week - tragedy!

Have decided to get Puerto Rico (forgive me if the names are a bit wrong) instead of (for the moment) Thurn and Taxis.

Got a copy of Ingenious (Reiner Knizia game) for me to deal with all the disappointment and indecision and had good fun with that this weekend with 2 & 3 players.

Thanks for the ideas though, it has shown that there seems to be either a lack of good quality Zombie / Horror board games or a surprising lack of demand for the genre.

Guillotine won't be in for a while I'm afraid :( I am desperately hoping they reprint it before christmas as it was my main idea for presents for quite a few people! The fools!) As for Bohnanza, I will put it on the order sheet and see if we can grab a copy next week.

Puerto Rico is a good call, Liam lent Iain a copy once and it took him a year to get it back, always a good sign methinks. But Thurn and Taxis does look ace, only Rio Grande could make a game about the postal system in Germany in the 17th century AND make it a good game! Has anyone here played Thurn and Taxis yet? I'm curious to know how it plays.

Tragic turn of events, don't have Guillotine, heads will roll! Couldn't resist.

Now I have a dilemma Thurn or Puerto, oh well it's Christmas in December and my birthday in January makes presents easier for everyone. There's me thinking I'd try and get grown up presents this year.
